From the Victorian period to the 1950s, 60s & 70s western fashion has been utilizing Indian sari silks in their designs. When speaking with our factory manager in India about sourcing real metal lamé he told us about a collection of antique sari his mother and aunts had in storage. We immediately knew we had to see them. Unlike modern sari and other metallic textiles which are woven with a more cost effective polyester fiber. The vintage sari silk is woven with real metal threads. These looms have to be manned by hand and it is a slow and laborious process which no one wants to resurrect. Each piece is made one at a time, utilizing the borders of the sari to maximum impact. Because many of the textiles are half a century old a few minor imperfections may be present. Think of these as time keepers and story tellers of the colorful Indian weddings and festivals they were worn to in their past lives. The beautiful metallic threads and silks still shine on for years to come.
